Being confounded by the god of chaos is all part of nature photography. What matters most is how you handle it. You didn't swear and jump up and down and throw things into the bushes, so I think you are going to make it through disappointment just fine. Thank goodness that you are not like me and have a seizure of hysteria that makes pedestrians 200 meters away immediately turn and walk the other way.
