An eroded earth & sand cliff that is full of holes is either the site of swallow nests or the site of the St. Valentine’s Day massacre. Odds are in favour of the former interpretation. This nest-riddled cliff was not created by Cliff swallows, as their moniker would suggest, but instead are the work of Bank swallows. They clearly understand the concept of high-rise accommodations. Although the Scarborough Bluffs are prime real estate for this kind of development, this particular abandoned project was discovered on the precipitous banks of Highland Creek. Very large and much deeper excavations sometimes also occur and I’ve seen one being utilized by a Belted Kingfisher with mischief on its mind.
The biggest excavation that I have yet managed to discover was truly impressive and perhaps home to a very formidable stranger, which I shall always come to think of as the Creature of the Black Lacuna. I’ve concluded that it might emerge at Hallowe’en. Bring flashlights!
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
