We just set up a bird feeder in the backyard & have tons of birds & a few squirrels fattening up  ... today we had a flock of ... black birds (please help with name??? - they are twice as big as a finch , very common) - I estimate approx 300 land in our yard!!! Unbelievable!!!!!    Also, can someone tell me the name of a small black, gorgeous smooth colored bird with white / light belly?? Not a chickadee.  Cheers.  and, what other species of birds have you seen that are not common?  p.s - i also posted earlier about seeing 10+ Waxwing's for the 1st time. Wow!!

Birding takes my mind off stuff and it adds good life to a tuff life. It also helps me forget about my spine pain and stress.  Laugh, eat, be merry.  Anybody with extra $ may send me some as It will permit me to travel.

Re: small black birds with white belly ... perhaps Dark-eyed Junco?  Look for their white-edged tails, especially during flight!

Enjoy your feeder, you'll get a lot of visitors at this time of year.

The other bird you described could be a nuthatch of some type - I'll put some photos up later to help you id.

Your flock of 300 are probably Euro Starlings with some Brownheaded Cowbirds mixed in there.

Your other little bird is very likely a Junco.

This topic was originally posted in "Toronto reports" but as it is more of a RFI I moved it here.

Thanks for posting, and good birding.

Female Dark Eyed-Junco's have some subtle colouring - might be why you are noticing a difference.

You can see example pictures here - Junco (All About Birds)
