Birded the spit from 8:30 to 1:30 yesterday (Jan 24). A very quiet day as the ponds are iced over and cold temperatures caused most birds to stay down. Did find 3 and a possible 4th Great-horned owl as well as a Rough-legged hawk and a couple of Red-tails. The GHOWs may be pairing up so care must be taken as to not disturb them. Two of the Owls I saw were together and were calling. Two kestrels were also present. 8 White-winged Scoters (a couple of males in breeding plumage) and the usual assortment of winter ducks. A flock of approximately 30 Pine Siskins, a seperate flock of around 25 American Tree Sparrows and a group of 6 Song Sparrows were the only perching birds that were brave enough to show themselves.
Good birding,
Iain
