Posted in the other thread but it's a dhc-4a with a PT-6A engine mod.  Not a pretty bird.

Pearson?  Don't know.

Right bird, wrong field.

Downsview facing East, buildings from the prop forward are located at Yonge/Sheppard.

Downsview...  Pearson...  I was close.

There's just something weird with a plane that has to come in with that much nose down pitch...
Good forward visibility I imagine...

Yep, great visibility.

It was designed as a STOL (Short Take Off + Landing) craft, meant for supply distribution into regions with smaller, unpaved runways.  Nearest thing to it in the CANFORCE inventory is the Buffalo, and that is going to be phased out once a new SAR a/c is purchased.

I'm familiar with the aircraft and mission, I'm just looking at that photo I'm hearing my flying instructor in my head "a little more nose down.  No, a little more, maintain normal approach speed... more trim..."   Ahhhhh make it stop.

This a/c was displaying

its (STOL) capabilities.  Super slow high rate of descent and stop.. and then very very short take off..

Downsview looking East.. taken from within the field

@Attila

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) flew 9 of the DHC-4 Caribou (CC-108) aircraft for quite a number of years.  My dad had almost 1,000 hrs in the left chair in these puppies, both in Canada and overseas with the UN during the 60's.

And you're right, there currently are six DHC-5 Buffalo (CC-115) being flown by the CF on SAR missions out of Comox, BC (442 Sqn).

I had many a years procuring spare parts for the Buffalo aircraft while I was in the CF ... ugh.

Cheers!  Rory

Hey there Rory,

With regards to your dad - that must have been an experience that goes beyond words!  I used to watch them whenever they flew into Downsview and Trenton, quite the sight they were!

They are repainting a Caribou out in Hamilton with UN colours and are having a dediction ceremony for it on August 8-9 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.  A Buffalo has been committed for static, so it should make for some great photo opportunities.  You can be certain that I'll post some in this thread when I get home that night.

A bit about the dedication ceremony...

Nine Canadian UN Peacekeepers were killed when a Canadian UN Buffalo aircraft #461 was shot down over Syria on 09 AUG 1974.

This is the largest single loss of Canadians on UN duty to date in Canadian History.

The Buffalo aircraft is being restored in the UN markings of BUFFALO 461 by a Volunteer Restoration Committee at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario.

The plan is to dedicate the aircraft in the memory of the nine deceased UN Peacekeepers on Canada's new national PEACEKEEPING DAY, 09 AUG 09, redesignated in honour of those 9 peacekeepers.

Hey Attila!

Vnice reply ... thanks!  My Dad spent 23 years in the CF and flew everything from Expeditor, Canso, Lancaster, Caribou, and ultimately the Dak.  He had over 5,000 in the Dak alone.  We spent 6 years in Trenton, so I know what you mean!  I spent 13 years in the Air Force and am actually looking at getting back in!!  They're crying for people, but it still amazes me how slow the government can be sometimes ... and I hate waiting.  LOLOLOL.

I'll have to tell the Old Man about the dedication.  He knew the crew of that Caribou that went down and I know he'd be interested in ceremony.  He donated $$ to the Mynarski Lanc's refurb.

Thanks for the heads up!

Cheers, Rory

Those are some serious hours on various multi aircraft - he must have tonnes of stories to tell.  :D

RE: the dedication, let me know if you plan on going as I'd love to take some photos of you and your dad with the planes for you to take home with you.

Feel free to email me:  attila@thehotramp.com

Hi Attila,

That would be a hoot ... but, my Mom and Dad now live in Lethbridge, AB and wouldn't be able to attend.  He was happy to hear about the dedication, though.

Cheers!
