Mississauga Killderr fledged.

Though not of any huge importance in the overall, and not as exciting as Piping Plover nests I am happy to report the successfull fledging of 3 Killdeer chicks to full flight status. The only noteworthy issue may be that the chosen site was a fairly busy parking lot (cars & trucks) in Mississauga. I wouldn't have thought the area very good potential for a Killdeer brood with a very few ditches (often lacking any water), some lawns and ashphalt as habitat and food supply. Obviously they know more than I about raising their young in such a place. This is also at least their second or third year. The resident Kestrel's obviousy had other food than Killdeer chicks in other more populous birds, mice and perhaps baby wabbits?

Last week I drove through the industrial section of Hansen Rd. in Brampton for an 8:30am appointment on Queen St. and was surprised to see a killdeer scuttle across the road in front of the car.

There are usually killdeers hanging out in the parking lot of the now closed Sams Club in Richmond Hill - near Hightech Road and Silver Linden.
