Great looking gull - was the biggest on the beach until the adult great black backed gull showed up.

I hate to sound pedantic, but juvenile herring gull is mostly brown with an almost solid black beak. I used to have a flight shot example on Flickr. Just deleted it in a recent pruning unfortunately. Looks like this one is in second cycle...

Hey there Andy, no worries about sounding pedantic - after reviewing the Sibley's guide you're absolutely correct. Sometimes I forget that there are usually subtle differences between a year 1 vs. year 2 bird as you pointed out - thanks!
