I'm guessing the bird was about 12 - 15 in long

Hey!
I think you answered your own question when you said how big/small it was.
The tale of tail feathers tells us that it's a Sharpie.

There are some areas of bird ID that I am weak on and this is one of them.
Incidently, I spotted the Sharpie Friday morn at Lambton Woods when Denis, Graham and I were tracking the Pileated.
