Many of you are probably aware of a movement to appoint a national bird...some of you, like me, probably just assumed it was the Canada Goose or the Common Loon...surprisingly, there are quite a few birds being put forward...for example the raven and turkey vulture but the front runner seems to be the red tailed hawk...

My personal favourite would be either the common loon or the peregirine falcon. The loon's haunting lilt and the power of a peregrine in flight capture the true north: strong and not just free but untamed.

How about you guys?

They can't pick the loon because it is Ontario's official bird, and the official birds of the provinces/territories (if any) are excluded.  The choice is also supposed to be fairly wide spread across the country.  I like the Grey Jay, although we should go back to calling it the Canada Jay.

hmmm....I like the canada jay too...but, there is another thread on same topic...and Turtlebird makes an interesting point...we'd want something that could stand up to the bald eagle lol....so I'm going to settle on the Peregrine.

There's now an (unofficial) on-line poll with the choices of Canada Goose, Common Loon, Red-tailed Hawk, and Short-billed Crow.

What?  Never heard of a Short-billed Crow?   Maybe that's because everyone calls it an American Crow!

Personally, I'd have to go for the Common Raven.  They live in virtually every part of the country all year round, they're extremely intelligent, social, and generally under-appreciated.
