Point Pelee National Park closed

We were in the area and thought to visit Point Pelee this afternoon and when we came to Leamington there were traffic jams and fallen trees everywhere and even some damaged buildings and we later found out that a possible tornado had hit (see http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/canada/ ... ington-ont). When we arrived at Point Pelee the park was closed due to unsafe conditions, so if anyone is planning to go there in the near future it is a good idea to check if it is open or not.

So it unexpectedly turned into disaster-watching instead of birdwatching.

Did they happen to mention what the unsafe conditions were?  I'm wondering if it is "the risk of a large tree or two falling" or if there is widespread damage.

No, no specifics. From what I could see there were a few fallen trees along the road close to the park, but more widespread damage closer to and in southern Leamington.

Oh no....I read the news and it looks really serious in Leamington...I truely hope that Point Peele Park is ok and all the resident birds are ok..... :cry:

I just read on Ontbirds that Point Pelee is open to visitors again from today.
It seems like the damage to the park thankfully wasn't too severe.

Yes, I got notice from Ontbirds that the damage is not too bad, most damage is to the north and west of the park.....really thankful about that.
