I was ten feet away from this wondrous fellow, who seemed to take no notice of me. Or perhaps he took great notice of me, and had fond feelings? Anyhow, I was delighted to spend about 15 minutes sitting there with the heron until eventually some maniac mother-and-child combo spooked the bejesus from him and away he flew...

sorry if i made the photos a little too big, folks, i've never posted images before. as you may imagine, i'm a little miffed about not getting the entirety of wings into the i.f. shot, but it was a surprising and sudden moment, and I did the best I could...

These shots are great.
I love the first photo.
I'm always more partial to these guys out of water. ( I guess that's because I rarely find them in the water).
I wouldn't be too "miffed" about missing the whole bird in the second photo, it still looks great. I'd be more miffed that they allow children in the park in the first place. It's just for birds and people who like birds.      (kidding people, I'm kidding)

Many thanks, Meghan. Although your comment was in jest, I am in complete agreement. This is a nice time of year for us heron fans; I see them every time I go out to watery places in the SW end of Toronto and into Etobicoke...of course, I also hallucinate great blue herons and even egrets, but this guy at the park was real and bona fide!

Thanks, folks!
I'm a little shy about posting bird pics on this site...something about equipment envy, perhaps.
I've been delighted with the heron & egret presence in the High Park/Humber Bay Parks areas lately...
