May 9 Update:
Today I spent from 8am to 1pm at Rosetta McClain Gardens. I didnt spend all that time birding..I socialize alot...but for a frame of reference so people understand that once around the park doesnt yield the same. The last few days have seen the arrival of many more Bank Swallows, which nest in the side of the bluffs. Today Thrushes were the order of the day,Hermit,Swainsons,Wood Thrushes and a Veery were seen. White-crowned/Whit-throated,Song and Chipping Sparrows. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks,Eastern Kingbirds, several Baltimore Orioles and Gray Catbirds have arrived. A few more warblers are around but its work to even find them..recently seen,Yellow-rumped,Yellow,Black-throated Green/Blue,Black and White and todays new arrival 2 Magnolia Warblers. There was a Red-eyed Vireo today and a Least Flycatcher as well. An assortment of local and migrating raptors can be seen(only one ofs)recently, including Osprey,Northern Harrier,Redtailed Hawk,Coopers Hawk,Sharpshinned Hawk,American Kestrel,Peregrine Falcon and Turkey Vulture. Hoping for some overnite rain to really give us a proper fall out.
OLD POSTING
Over the last few days, all the usual suspects are being seen at Rosetta. A few Yellow-rumped Warblers,Pine Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo have been seen. Tree,Barn and Bank Swallows have flown by or in the case of the Bank Swallows, begun "nesting" in the side of the bluffs. Many Hermit Thrush,White-throated Sparrows,a few Chipping Sparrows.American Tree Sparrows and Fox Sparrows have been around. On the lake(a scope would definetly help but isnt necessary for IDs) have been many Red-breasted Mergansers, several Red-necked Grebe,a few Horned Grebe, many Cormorants and an occassional Common Loon. Caspain Tern and an Iceland Gull were seen. Several Great Blue Heron have flown past. Northern Flickers and Downy Woodpeckers are plentiful. Dark-eyed(Northern) Junco and Brown Creepers are also around in numbers. A Brown Thrasher and a Northern Mockingbird were seen in the last few days also. Though I cant swear to it,Im reasonably sure a Short-eared Owl flew past,I didnt get the best look at it though. Local Redtailed Hawks,Coopers Hawk,Sharpshinned Hawk,American Kestrel and Turkey Vultures put in almost daily appearances. Each day a few more species appear now.
