My reading week's coming up and I'd like to try for a couple of new gulls before the rest up them head back up to the arctic. I don't drive so I'm looking at either taking the Greyhound or one of the casino buses. I have a few questions...

Is a scope absolutely necessary? I don't have one. I feel I have a decent grasp on gull ID but I'd like to get a good look at something before adding it my list.
Is there one particular spot I should go to, like Adam Beck? Are there any hotspots fairly close to the drop-off spots for either of these forms of transportation? I understand the whole river is pretty good but I don't know how far different sites are, though I am willing to walk a few km if necessary.
Is any particular time/day of the week the best?
Fish Crows. Are they anywhere near the popular gull sites?

Thank you!

I would not recommend Niagara at all without a scope or car.
Queenston docks to adam beck is several kilometers
Adam beck to the Whirlpool is another 4km or so
The whirlpool to the falls area is another 5 or 6 km
Fort erie, where the fish crows, black-headed gull and kittiwake are is another 30 km or so from there.
And most of the birds are very far away, Queenston boat docks and a small part of the upper falls area are the only place where there's even a chance of seeing any numbers of gulls close, and they likely won't include the species you want.
Time of day doesn't matter, but the number of birds drops significantly on weekdays, probably because of dumps being open.

If you go, I'd say its likely that you'll get to the falls area, see maybe 6 or 7 gull species at most and get bored within a couple of hours, with no way of getting to any of the other spots.

Thanks Reuven, that was very helpful if a little disappointing. I've only seen 5 gulls so I may just make a falls trip out of it rather than a gull-watching trip and hope I can pick up one or two if I'm lucky.

7 species of gulls reported from waterloo, apparently excellent looks.
Never been here, but I'm guessing it would be fairly easy with Go buses.
