Little Blue Heron

A Little Blue heron was seen by five of us on Thursday January 5 at the ponds in Glen Haffy Park (Airport Road and Hwy #9).
The ponds are well stocked with fish in summer and the heron was seen near open water at the inflow.

How did you identify it, particularly seperating it from other herons and egrets? Would be a very rare bird, especially in winter
