Folks, I did a quick 1-3/4 hour bird this morning on Ward's Island and I was not disappointed. I caught the 6:35am ferry across to Ward's and caught the 8:20am (or so) ferry back. It was a great short birding trip!
I had a nice mix of birds and I only walked around Ward’s Island never straying any further west than the washrooms, south of the houses. Caught the 6:35 ferry across and the 8:20 back, so birded about 1¾ hours or so. Almost all of these birds were seen & heard in the areas to the east and to the south of the houses on Ward's.
It was good, here’s a partial list:
1 first year Orchard Oriole singing it’s heart out (near the furthest set of trees to the southeast, almost near the gap)
1 Mourning Warbler (heard then seen)
2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (courtship displaying)
6 Swainson’s Thrush
1 Gray-cheeked Thrush
1 female Cape May Warbler
3 female Magnolia Warbler
1 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
1 E Wood-Pewee
6 Least Flycatcher
5 Blackpoll Warblers – heard-only but didn’t really search hard to see
1 Wilson’s Warbler
1 Veery
1 female Ruby-throated Hummingbird
1 Willow Flycatcher
Regards & good birding,
