Maplewood Park - Thursday, April 12th

Hi everyone.  I was wandering around Maplewood Park this afternoon from 12:30-1:30pm.  Sighted the following:

Cardinal x 1 (male)
Chickadees x 6
Cooper's Hawk x 1 (male) - perched on tree branch right above my head!
House Sparrows - a few
Red-breasted Nuthatch x 1 (male)

Oddly quiet in the woods today.   :|

Maplewood Park:  East side of Glen Erin Dr., just North of Aquitaine Ave.

Jo-Anne - how's the Coopers nest coming along?  Think there any eggs yet?

Hi Bob.  For about the past 1 1/2+ weeks, female hawk has been sitting quietly in nest so I'm thinking she's probably sitting on eggs.  The male has been really active, flying through the woods, killing and eating furry creatures - not sure if he's going after squirrels or small rabbits or both.

Hello Jo-Anne, long time no talk. Glad to hear that the Coopers are there! We went to Riverwood and yes, the one is there as well!!

Hi cocosally.   It's great to see you here again!     The last few years, there were 4 baby hawks at Maplewood and 5 baby hawks at Riverwood.  I wonder if this year will be the same?

I truely hope that there will be more! I notice that there is less hawk in Mississauga area, due to demolition and buildinghouse.

I dropped by Maplewood Park on Saturday and easily found the nest and the female incubating - it's still pretty easy to see,  I'm not sure how it will be later in the summer?  I did not see the male around while I was there.  What was the first day the female was observed in incubation position in the nest?  

   Is the tree where they built their nest a couple of years ago on the other side of the path still there?  There doesn't seem to be any trace of that old nest left.

Hi ostrich.  According to my notes here at home, the female has been sitting quietly in the nest since March 30th.  On April 16th, she stood up momentarily to move something (eggs?) around in the nest then settled back down.   I think we're going to be seeing baby hawks early this year!  

Is the tree where they built their nest a couple of years ago on the other side of the path still there?  There doesn't seem to be any trace of that old nest left.

The tree is still there but the nest is long gone thanks to some major wind storms.
