Hello All -

I am new at backyard bird feeding and I am already addicted!!!

I put out my Hummber Feeder on April 30 and finally saw one last Saturday, May 12th. I believe it's a Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Male as it had a red neck. He came in around 5:30pm, stayed for only a couple of minutes and then left .. came back 20 minutes later, left and came bck 30 minutes later. The Hummer didn't come again until Wednesday, May 16th.

How come he doesn't visit everyday? Or could that be a different hummingbird?

First off, where do you live?

We are in the west Toronto/Etobicoke area and the Hummingbird action is pretty quiet.  I have nectar feeders out from early May onwards for the Orioles.  But it's rare that I ever see a Hummingbird until late August when they are starting to migrate south again.

I don't know a whole lot about Hummingbirds but what I do know is this...  first, we only get Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in Ontario.  And I don't think they nest in our area.  Go outside Toronto, and the numbers rise.  We have a friend in Loretto and she's got regular visitings RTHBs all summer (Loretto is about 40 mins north of us).

I seem to have better luck with Hummingbirds when I grow certain plants than with the feeders.

Not that this is a whole lot of help but just throwing a few other bits to you.

Cheers!

A birth certificate shows we were born.  A death certificate shows we died.  Pictures show we live.
