I live in Toronto.
The problem with the shootings is they are random, at least for the general population if not for the victims. What can you do about them as long as the criminal system keeps putting these criminals back on the street. For the Eaton Centre shooting, both victims had long criminal records with one supposed to be at home on house arrest, and I think the shooter also had a record.
I don't let it bother me; if it is going to happen it will happen. I don't live in the nicest part of town although there are much worse. The cops come and visit the building next door at least twice a week of moving here there were two gang-related shootings at the main intersection. I choose not to let the criminals force me to stay indoors.
Toronto is not as safe as it was 20 years ago but it is a far cry from most American cities.
