Nice pictures, the first one is a juvie (not sure about gender), but the second one is an adult male, a bit scruffy looking, but only adult males have that red plumage and red bill. Juvie males are mostly brown with maybe some red in it.

Thanks for the correction Thouc. I wasn't sure about the male, I was going by the mixed colors

This is because they are molting. Currently the pair of Cardinals that frequent my feeder are both completely featherless on their heads. Nice photographs by the way! :)
