Hey Everyone;
I'm looking for good locations in Peterborough and area as we just moved here.
So far I have had good luck by the university, the parkway trail, beavermead park and jackson park.
Thanks for your help.

One of my favourite Spots used to be Miller Creek Conservation Area.  Take Carnegie Ave, which becomes the Centre Line of Smith, to the 7th Line and turn left (west).  The entrance is at the bottom of a hill just past a farmhouse.  It always used to be poorly marked and probably still is.

It's a large wetland with an old railway line running through it.  You follow the rail line south, with a few detours into fields.  Last time I was there (a few years ago) the fields were becoming quite forested and the water level in the marsh was low, making for very little open water.  It's worth checking out in any season.  It was the most reliable place I knew for American Bittern.

The zoo can also be productive:  the tall conifers and the road that runs along the top of the riverbank.

Also, check eBird.  It will show you the local areas that have been identified as "hotspots".

And I almost forgot:  the Lakefield Sewage Lagoons.  I don't know what the access status is these days.  I haven't been there since before the municipalities got overly concerned with liability.  There used to be a well-worn path around the gate.  It's probably different now.

Thank you  :D It'll be fun to explore and get to know this area. I can't wait to see the difference in the backyard birds as well.

All of your locations have been productive. I can even hand feed the chickadees with my 1yr old at the gate of miller creek ca, it's literally 5min up the road from us.  :D  thanks again for your suggestions, lol you also got me hooked on I bird/ebird.

Glad it helped! My information is a bit out of date.  Now that you're an ebird user, you should check out the email alerts.  You can setup a daily alert of rare birds for your area.  You will find lots of stuff that never appears on Ontbirds.  (Like a Parula Warbler spotted in downtown Peterborough last week.)

Happy birding,

BB
