I noticed a news post on eBird, that they are looking for thousands of bird images to create a database for an automated identification system.  I don't think they're prepared to pay anything, but you would be contributing to a research project.  You can check it out here:  http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/merlin201208

I'm sorry to be negative about this, but I won't be giving any of my images away for free. Once the technology is developed, an "App" will be created and sold for millions of dollars but the photographers who gave the original images will get nothing.

Of course considering how bad I am at identifying birds, I will buy the App when it is available.

I kind of doubt the Cornel Lab will be making millions on this.  If they manage to recoup their costs they'll be lucky.

Agreed.  I certainly don't mind donating to a worthy cause.

Something like this can only increase interest and public participation in birding.   The more people that care about birds and their habitat, the better it is for birds and their habitat.

And if Cornell somehow did manage to make money on this venture, all the better.   The research and conservation work that comes out of there deserves it - the money would be put to good use.
