I birded the Spit this morning and saw three flocks of Common Redpolls, one on Peninsula D, one on C, and the last in the woods between C and B. The Northern Goshawk, a juvenile, was in the woods on Peninsula B. When I first saw the bird, it was flying right at me but banked at the last moment and lit in a tree about 50 meters to the north.

There were lots of ducks on the west side of the Spit, sheltering from a wind that blew hard all day. Big rafts of Scaup and Redheads, all three Mergansers, dozens of American Wigeon, Black Duck, and a lone female Ruddy Duck near the marina on Peninsula D. On the other side of D, gulls were sitting on a sandbar, and there was one Iceland Gull and a single Great Black-backed Gull among them.

A minor surprise for the day was a Brown Creeper keeping company with a flock of Chickadees.
