Excellant bird Feeder location for Photographs

A excellant bird feeder is located and maintained in the northwest corner of the first parking lot of Morningside Park. In my trips their I have noted this Red Bellied Woodpecker as well as, plentiful Cardinals, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Chickadees, Nuthatches both Rose Breasted and White, Mourning Doves, Dark Eyed Junco, Northern Flicker, American Finches. have all been known to stop by. Even a Red-tailed Hawk crusied through my lens one day. You can even shoot in the comfort of your car if you have a good telephoto lens. Thanks to Jerry and Evelyn for maintaining the feeder. Of course it does not hurt to drop some seed yourself into the feeder when you visit.

Would have loved to but unfortunately most weekdays I'm stuck at work until sundown when most birds are gone.  It sucks, I can only do serious birding on weekends...and even then I gotta fit in chores and all that.  I might try to go on Sunday.

I was there last weekend and there were no less than 10 Cardinals both male and females in the trees surrounding the feeder (probably more). There was also a handful of Chickadees, at least one Blue Jay, Downie and Hairy woodpeckers landing back and forth on the birch tree nearest the parking lot, White brested nuthatch, and a common Redpoll kept landing at the base of the feeder on the ground to pick up fallen seeds. Some type of Hawk also streamed accross the parking lot but too fast for me to ID. A very busy joint!

I was there today for about 1 hour from 3:30pm to 4:30 pm and here are the birds I saw:
Chickadees and lots of them
4 or 5 Cardinals including a couple of females
A downy woodpecker (female)
A couple of white-breasted nuthatches which are quickly becoming one of my favourite birds.  Here's my favourite pick I took of one:


I expected a bit more variety, but maybe I went too late and it was quite cold.  Should I try earlier times to increase sighting of say a Blue Jay or Red Breasted Woodpecker?

The blue Jays come and go fairly regulary and the Red Bellied Woodpecker comes around 9 15 am He stays a very short time and then moves on returning about 2 hours later very skittish so when he you spot him in the trees take cover etc or he just moves on. I have been at this feeder alot and perhaps he has a feeding circuit that he just keeps moving around to. Enjoy

Ok just returned from spending a couple of hours there since about 10:30 am.  Didn't see the Red Belly but finally saw the Blue Jays as well as some Juncos and the usual suspects Chickadees, Nuthatches, Cardinals, Woodpeckers.

Also met the lady who maintains that feeder...very nice lady.  The Blue Jays swung by shortly after she left probably sensing the peanuts which they seem to like.

Edit: just looked at my pics and it seems I also landed an American Tree Sparrow which is a new species for me.

I like this shot of a Blue Jay even if it's directly on the feeder...was looking for a tree shot but Blue Jays are skittish and very intelligent...I'm convinced they were just playing with me lol

The feeder is maintained by Jerry mostly because he is tall but Evelyn comes by with a small laddder both good people. Never any guarantees with nature maybe the Red Bellied has moved on will check with a friend who attends there regulary to see if he has been there lately and seen it. You will note holes are drilled into the feeder base and so what I do is have a box cutter knife with me and sharpen a branch and put it into the holes and then you wait till the birds land on the branch for a more natural looking photo.
