While out at Hall's Road this morning, I noticed the Barred Owl sitting in a tree a few feet away from me. I stopped to watch him for a moment, and then suddenly, he flew into action! I managed to grab this shot as he flew right over my head - I'm telling ya, this owl made my DAY!

Love this flight. Good blue sky in the background, they do actively hunt during the day normally so its nice to snap one on the move.

No - I'm not into baiting at all!! I don't mind feeding birdseed and peanuts from time to time to the little songbirds (with my kids), but I'm not into baiting the owls, or the deer with bait or calls. I've seen some people using deer calls lately in some wilderness areas, and it annoys me! Last week at Hall's some guy was there with a dead rodent and he kept tossing it just under where the barred owl was perched, and when the owl didn't bother with it, he'd pick it up and toss it again until finally someone told him that the owl would be highly unlikely to go for a dead rodent! Ughhh!! I enjoy watching him when I see him, but I've learned not to interfere with him, and to keep my distance.... I don't stay all day, and though I'm out and about quite often, I'm happy when I find him, and when I don't. I enjoy all the creatures I come across out there -- this morning I had two deer run out onto the road infront of my truck! Good thing I was only doing about 10kms an hour along that stretch!! :D

Sometimes you need a little help to get the best shot.
