I was out for a short walk at Sam Smith Park on Monday afternoon and found lots of dragonflies and a few damsels as well.
There were dozens of Twelve-spotted Skimmers patrolling low over the pond. I've never seen that many there before, so I'm assuming most of them are migrants. There were Darners zipping around over the grassy areas. All the ones I got a decent look at appeared to be Common Green Darners. There were also Widow Skimmers, Common Whitetails, Eastern Forktails, and some unidentified bluets.
Just when I thought I wouldn't find any perched, I came upon a pair of Twelve-spotted Skimmers mating. After supervising while his mate deposited the eggs, this guy finally sat down for a rest:
A few minutes later, I found this Widow Skimmer devouring what appeared to be a small bee:
He seemed to be too busy eating to worry about me getting close.
