Pine Warbler, Towhee - TTP Wet Woods

Between two and four today, I flushed a Woodcock, saw two Eastern Towhee, watched a beautiful Pine Warbler singing, saw several Phoebes and
Yellow-rumped Warblers snagging gnats, (also a possible Yellow Warbler high in the trees), Ruby-crowned Kinglets...enchanting little birds,Caspian Terns overhead and a hawk (Rough-legged?) on the thermals. Oh Canada Canada Canada was background music from the White-throated Sparrows. You need your 'wellies' - it is indeed the WET woods.

Sounds like some new arrivals today! I was there yesterday and saw 3 Rusty Blackbirds, several Fox Sparrows and lots of Winter Wrens as my highlights. Would love to make a visit tomorrow to look for the Towhee, the Warblers and a few more sparrow species. Maybe there will be more arrivals tonight!  Thanks for your post.

so, "The Spit, aka TTP" is now open to the public during weekdays?  I understood it was only open to the public on weekends.

The 'Wet Woods' or Baselands of TTP is open during the week. This area is just inside the front gate to your right. You can't go further than the check in hut just along the main roadway, as the area is an active construction site until 4:30 on weekdays. You can go in to the entire park after 4:30.

Another good day in the Woods today. Pine Warblers, Myrtles, Towhee, Ruby & Golden Kinglets, Fox Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, Winter Wrens, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Hairy Woodpecker, Northern Flickers, Killdeer, Tree Swallow and Hermit Thrush.  

Enjoyed a flyover by a nice Osprey. He was headed West and looked like he was hunting - maybe we'll get lucky and he'll stick around for awhile (one was reported from the Islands a few days ago).  The big highlight of the day for me was a SANDHILL CRANE!  I heard him coming before I saw him - then he flew directly over me giving me a nice clear view.  He must be a very late migrant - most of them should be on their breeding grounds by now, shouldn't they??
