There are several places.  Toogood pond is great for beginners because it is a picturesque park with fairly tame wildlife.  And the variety is not too bad either.  This park is better for waterfowl I would say, which is a good starting point as they tend to stay still a lot better ;)

Another good park in Markham is Milne Dam conservation park which has some decent variety of wildlife.  Just the other day I saw Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Cormorants, 2 species of hawks, warblers, flycatchers and so on.  This park is less manicured than Toogood, but this also attracts more variety of wildlife.  Even saw bats but it was too dark for good pictures.

Those are the two that I know and like.  I know there are more but I haven't had a chance to explore much beyond that.  Have fun and good luck.

Milne Damn is a great place to start in that area. You can find just about anything there. Osprey's make their homes there (I've previously posted a picture of an Osprey from Milne on this board). There are loads of Great Blue Herons as well as Great Egrets which I also posted about on this board. You'll find Black Crowned Night Herons as well as a variety of water fouls and gulls and usually Caspian Terns. You can usually find shore birds and Belted King Fishers by the Damn. You will always find an assortment of Hawks as well as a good number of White Tale Deers on the south end of the park. Toogood park is also a good place depending on what your interests are. The marsh area should yield a good number of species.
