There are several places. Toogood pond is great for beginners because it is a picturesque park with fairly tame wildlife. And the variety is not too bad either. This park is better for waterfowl I would say, which is a good starting point as they tend to stay still a lot better
Another good park in Markham is Milne Dam conservation park which has some decent variety of wildlife. Just the other day I saw Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Cormorants, 2 species of hawks, warblers, flycatchers and so on. This park is less manicured than Toogood, but this also attracts more variety of wildlife. Even saw bats but it was too dark for good pictures.
Those are the two that I know and like. I know there are more but I haven't had a chance to explore much beyond that. Have fun and good luck.
