The owl woods have been closed since November 24th because of deer hunting.  They will be open again on December 10th.  Previous to the 24th, Long-eareds and Short-eareds were reported as well as Barred and Saw-whet.

Good luck,
Iain

So when I got on Dec 14th the owls should be nice and spooked.  I guess the won't appreciate that I am only trying to photograph them, not hurt them LOL

thanks

From various postings on Ontbirds and other places, it would seem that there's a major vole crash on Amherst this year. Both owls and raptors are scarce this year on Amherst.

Sounds like Wolfe Island would be a better spot for Snowies this year. But I have no idea where on Wolfe Island tho.

Only found one long eared owl on the weekend, and two red tailed hawks.

4 - 5 snowies in and around 7th and Baseline roads, maybe a radius of 1 ½ km.

I went to Kingston over the weekend, it was mild and fairly sunny, a really beautiful weekend!
Took the ferry to Wolfe Island and spent the morning there, I saw 2 snowies in farmers fields.  One of which was fine with me walking about 100 meters away and photographing him :)
Then headed to Amherst Island on Sunday morning and headed to the Owl woods.  It was a very busy spot, maybe 25 birders there?
I walked around for 1.5hrs and finally saw a long eared owl, it was the only owl I saw :(

Hopefully this helps and good luck birding :)
