Have you heard about "Project Snowstorm"? It's a collaborative project by U.S. researchers to track the movements of some of the Snowy Owls and to learn more about this year's historic irruption. They are using high tech, solar powered transmitters that use a combination of satellites and cellular networks to collect the data. Apparently they will even be able to collect data about some of their movements in the Arctic.  There are currently three interactive maps for three different owls in the Eastern U.S. available to look at on the website.  It's fascinating to see how much or how little each moves around. One of the owls was trapped at an airport and relocated 40 miles away, but he managed to return to the airport within a few days. Since they have now exceeded their fund raising goal, they are hoping to deploy up to 20 transmitters.

There's lots to explore on the website here: http://www.projectsnowstorm.org  You can also send them your own photos of Snowy Owls to add to their data collection efforts.
