Hi Bluffs Birder,I certainly encourage U to join us at Rosetta McClain Gardens next fall. In the spring the spot is not the same,as raptors hit the Niagara Escarpment and disperse. A group of us will head to Beamer near Grimsby for a few day trips, and Im sure you could carpool with someone if Ud like to join us.
The reason RMG gets the raptors, quite simply is that it is close to the lake. Some species follow the lakeshore, more closely then others. It is a major migration route. (in total now in that wee small park Ive seen personally 177 species). The lake is a natural barrier. Aside from a few of the regularily seen 15 raptors, most are not strong enough to fly over the lake. There is no lift over it,so the birds follow the lakeshore closely until a more narrow crossing point.
Im certain on many days when other sites such as Iriquois Shoreline or High Park see far more birds that I am missing hundreds/thousands of birds to the north. Finding a spot where they would consistantly funnel through is another matter.
If U see me there this spring, dont be shy,the park is a terrific spot for small birds that time of year.
