8 Owls Leslie Spit (Tommy Thompson Park)Sunday December 30th

Hi went for a walk at Tommy Thompson Park with a couple friends yesterday and we had a great day! Saw 5 owl species including 3 short-eared hunting in the cloudy day, barred, northern saw-whet, 2 great horned and a long eared owl. Also seen was a hoary redpoll in a flock of ~40 redpolls, juvenile bald eagle in close, northern shrike, peregrine falcon and all the usual winter ducks.

I was also at the spit on the 30th, but didn't see a single owl. Were they concentrated in a certain area of the spit?

The short-eared owls were flying all over between pipit point and the lighthouse in the open area. The other owls have to search the peninsulas like where they do the bird banding,a great horned loves that area. The other owls are found by looking carefully in the woods before and after the little red bridge.

whereabouts was the bald eagle spotted?

i may be going this saturday or sunday, so any pointers on where to shift my attention to would be much appreciated

and which peninsula is the bird banding done on? is it the ones after the red bridge?

bird banding done on the peninsula before the red bridge, where the marina is. the 2 peninsulas after the red bridge though are good for owls and hawks too.
The bald eagle was sitting in a tree by the trail just before the little red bridge

on the 31st the Eagle was sitting out on the lake ice inside the red bridge.  Way out.  Needed at least a 400 mm lens to get close enough to ID but he sure was pretty.  I never saw a single owl but did manage to get some very nice shots of a Kestrel munching down on a mouse near the entrance on the south side of the weight station at the gates.
