With bird sightings slowing down and after seeing some spectacular photos from Paul and Gary I was encouraged to take some photos of the butterflies and dragonflies near a wooded trail close to Kortright Center. I hope I have identified them right. They have their own beauty, don't they?

1. Red Admiral

2. Little-wood satyr

3. Common Wood Nymph

4. Female Ruby Meadowhawk

5. Ebony Jewelring

6. Common Whitetail

I don't know that you could make a positive ID on #4. There are a couple of species where the females are practically indistinguishable.

THanks for the kind comment everyone, and great shots Dinosaur! Unfortunately, these meadowhawks need be caught and further examined with a 10 X or 15X to identify to species.  Ruby, Cherry, and White-faced meadowhawks are extremely similiar.  With a hand lens, you are looking for subtle differences with the genitalia. I  have macro photos that show these difference so I can positively  distinguish them apart. Nice shot though. Too bad summer is pretty much over now.
