Sunday, August 3, we visited the Rouge Conservation Area, which is near the zoo. We walked out to the field and heard the call of a Pileated Woodpecker. One flew out of the woods and perched in a tree. We heard more calls from the woods and three more Pileated Woodpeckers appeared. They flew over our heads and around the field. A wow moment! We also saw 10 Turkey Vultures roosting in a tree.
We then headed over to Lower Reesor Pond. Highlights were five Pied-billed Grebes, including two chicks and one Common Galinule. Upper Reesor Pond was very murky, the water was high and there were no mudflats. We did see a Belted Kingfisher, one GBH, one Solitary Sandpiper and lots of Cliff Swallows. There were many songbirds hiding in the bushes.
