I have watched him(?) catch many fish, but never anything that big. It appears to be a Round Goby, so I hope he catches every one he sees!

There was a throng of photographers there yesterday.  It sounded like the red carpet at TIFF every time the bird moved!

I was taking those photos on Saturday around 5:30 PM. There were only 3 photographers including me at that time. We were sitting on the rock and watching him catching fish. He just ignored us even though we were sitting so close.

Yes, we all need to thank you for the guy who found this at the beginning.

I hope it's ok if I post a video I shot today of this Least Bittern catching a fish.  It's not the best video as there were many photographers there and difficult to get a good vantage point but I think it was still an ok capture (for both the Bittern and for myself :))

Nicely done! I may be in the minority but I still think there's something about video that is lacking in stills, especially where wildlife is concerned (A video tells a story while a still captures a moment in time?). Btw, were you able to find some (or all) of the other heron species reported earlier at CSSP?

Oh yeah I agree completely.  There's nothing like a good photo.  For example you can't really display a video on the wall.  But like you said, a video tells a story and in this case it showed us how the smallest Bittern catches a fish.

You know what, I did check for the other Heron species but only saw one Great Blue Heron where the Yellow Crowned and Black Crowned Night Herons had been seen for the last little while.  They may have been around ...perhaps roosting in the trees somewhere.

edit: would have been cool to see 5 Heron/Bittern species in one day...the ol' Heron Hat Trick ;)

Agreed, while both video & stills have their own different strengths, video is better at capturing interactions and idiosyncrasies.  Stills can't capture that wiggle as the bittern gets ready to strike!

I have found 6 different heron/bittern species at Colonel Sam Smith Park this month (add Great Egret to your list), but never more than 4 on any single visit.

Absolutely,  both are the good tools for recording the pleasure moment in different format. But, it is nothing better than see it in live.
