Frogs and Suckers

The frogs are calling all over the wetlands at Mountsberg Conservation Area (near Campbellville) yesteday, April 14.  Lots of Wood Frogs among others including some non-shy ones near the main path/road part of the Pioneer trail.

And today, Wed the 15, the White Suckers are in full run at the Rattray. I stopped counting after the first two collections in slower deeper water, where I counted 42 and 57 respectively. Lots of splashing as they work through some of the rocky shallows. Best views from the trail that follows the creek and ends at Meadow Wood Rd. (note: parking is not available on Meadow Wood.) The Sucker run is usually very short and it may be finished by tomorrow.

I forgot to mention there was a Green Darner near the observation tower at Mountsberg as well.

Thanks for the information on the sucker run at Rattray. Any estimates on the total number of White Suckers you saw? I was down there April 23 and saw at most a couple hundred fish, which is considerably less than what I recall seeing there 5-10 years ago.

Hi,
I couldn't really say how much fish there were. I only looked into the creek at the points where it could be seen from the paths. There were definitely hundreds of fish but how many total I couldn't give any sort of accurate number. I didn't see those numbers of fish on any later visits though.

Thanks for the info. That sounds like more than what I saw. I will have to try and go down there are bit earlier next year. Feel free to let me know what you see in Rattray in the future.
