Male showed up around 6:30AM, hovered around the feeder but did not feed. I watched for half an hour but he did not return, earliest first sighting ever for me! :)

I was out most of the day, just returned and a male stopped by for a long drink. I assume it's the same one from early this morning and he's staking out his territory. Welcome back!

We're tied this year Howie for first sightings

Male Hummingbird showed up in my backyard this morning.
Did I have any feeders out?
No
Did I run and get one ready?
Yes
Did I see him again after that?
No

Male Oriole in the yard today as well.

No

I am ready now...day late and a dollar short..story of my life  :roll:


One a side note, I also spotted my first June Bug! May 04.  :shock:  Yuck

From what I can tell I still have only one male and he sometimes goes for over an hour between visits. Hopefully the action will pick up when other males arrive during the next couple of weeks. I was going to switch the feeder positions but I am tempted to just get rid of the regular feeder (for the summer) and replace it with another hummer feeder. Is it worth having two hummingbird feeders about 6 feet apart in plain view of each other? Any thoughts Meghan? :)

My resident male is starting to hang around more but I still haven't seen any females. Has anyone in the Toronto area seen any? There's a big stand of honeysuckle about to bloom in Bestview Park where I've seen hummers in the past. I'll check it out and post any activity here.

Howie,

I have a very tiny backyard and I always have at least 2 feeders out. I always get one very territorial female in who guards on feeder like that is  her only goal in life.So I put out at least one more so the other birds can sneak in behind her and grab something to drink when she is not watching.
So for you to add another feeded is no issue. Your backyard is much bigger than mine so the only thing you have to be concerned about is which way to look.

Finally! My first female arrived this morning and the male has been hanging around between feedings. Let the fun begin! :)
