I saw this gull today and I can't quite figure it out. I am guessing it is a first or second winter gull. Thoughts?

Second-winter Herring Gull. Too big and bulky for a Ring-billed Gull which is the only other expected species locally with dark primaries and grey back. A Thayer's would be very similar and I'm not sure how you would conclusively eliminate it, but it is much rarer and would likely have somewhat browner primaries and wouldn't look so bulky next to the adult Herring.

Thanks! The first websites I looked at didn't show a second year Herring gull.
