I'm heading to Newfoundland in August and spending a week in the St. John's area. Any suggestions for birding? I've heard about Cape St. Mary's. Anything else?

I'm not sure when seabirds disperse from their colonies.  Cape St. Mary's is fabulous but good to try to avoid being fogged in, less impressive then.  There are numerous boat tours in Witless Bay area - they are mostly whale-focussed and treat birds as a bit of an afterthought, however.  Cape Spear is a good place to go for a short excursion, Cape St. Francis for a medium one (great blueberries), whole Irish Loop south of St. John's, including Cape Race, for a full day excursion.  Check both nf.birds google group and Newf. birdwatching group facebook page for rarities, they can get some great ones!

Agree with the recs above.  Regarding Witless Bay, we were able to book a Zodiac boat tour, which allowed us to customize where we went and how long we viewed things.  More expensive but then you have more control.  Cape St. Mary's is a must.
