Yesterday Ian Cannell and I spent a beautiful day birding the Carden Alvar area where we found 83 species of birds and here is a partial list of the birds found.
Common Loons overhead, D-C Cormorants overhead, American Bitterns ( Sedge Wren Marsh ), Great Blue Herons, Wood Ducks, Green-winged and Blue Winged Teal, Ring-necked Ducks,Lesser Scaup, TV's, Broad-winged Hawks, Bald and Golden Eagles ( The juvenile Golden Eagle was at Canal Lake being chased by an Osprey. The Eagle actually touched down on the water just like a Bald Eagle ) 11 Osprey, Ruffed Grouse, Wild Turkeys ( Wylie Rd ), Virginia Rails (within feet of us )( Prospect Rd ), 2 Yellow Rails ( we watched as one of them walked back and forth only 2 metres in front of us at the Sedge Wren Marsh and it also did a little flight showing off it's white wing patches), Sora ( Sedge Wren Marsh ), Common Moorhen, Sandhill Cranes ( Wylie Rd ), Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs ( Prospect and Eldon Stn Rds ), Solitary Sandpiper, ( Prospect Rd )Wilson's Snipes ( many ), several A. Woodcocks along Wylie Rd, Caspian Terns, 2 Whip-poor-Wills ( Sedge Wren Marsh ), B. Kingfishers, Y-B Sapsucker, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers, E. Phoebes, E. Kingbird, Horned Lark, Ravens, E. Bluebirds, many Brown Thrashers, Loggerhead Shrike, Red-eyed Vireo, Nashville, Yellow, Black-and-white and Yellow-rumped Warblers, E. Towhees, Tree ( many ), Field, Vesper, Swamp, Savannah and White-throated Sparrows, Rusty Blackbirds, many E. Meadowlarks, and Baltimore Oriole ( Wylie Rd ).
We also found 3 Porcupines, Deer, Groundhog, many frogs, and Painted and Map Turtles.

Wylie Road is north of Kirkfield in Victoria County and Kirkfield itself is on County Road 48 east of Highway 12 and well north of Whitby and about 130 km from Toronto if you follow the roads and not a Crow.
