photographed the  hussy.

Hey Shortsighted:
You may actually have an American Lady here rather than a Painted. They're very similar, but on the forewing above, the American has a tiny white dot in one of the orange patches that isn't there on the Painted. You can see this dot in your photo. There are a couple of other field marks that also argue on behalf of the American--you could check out the differences in one of the Field Guides like Ken Kaufman's or the one available from the Royal Ontario Museum, both of which are excellent. I stand corrected, again. As always, one only sees what one knows. By all rights
I should  then be blind. Thanks for the heads-up. These butterflies should come
with labels for the benefit of dummies. I guess the "dot" IS a label, just one I
couldn't read. That's the beauty of this forum. The block chain of enlightened
amateur naturalists leads the less informed out of the field of ignorance.
