I hate when I first notice the crickets singing at night and the cicadas droning in the heat of the day...it's mating season for them which means fall is almost here....and I take stock of the summer.
It was another one of those weird summers where June came and went without a single June Bug...but it wasn't a bad year for fire flies...
Bats were a worrisome disappointment...I saw a few flying about in April...we usually have a colony of LBB's in our eaves -- it never concerns me b/c they don't get into the house...but no colony this year and after April, I have not seen any flying about.
Spring Peepers were short and stopped several times before disappearing for the year....
We had a pair of foxes den in the bush right in front of our house this year...and we'd spot the pair daily going back and forth until one night when we heard her giving the alarm call for about 45 minutes...she wasn't moving about...my best guess is that a coyote found the den. I saw her the next day briefly as she sat at the treeline....looking lost....and then she wandered off...we haven't seen either of them since....
Ever year we have a pair of robins nest in the crab apple tree in front of our house...this year was no disappointment....in fact, the nest is still going in the same nest although it appears to be just her caring for brood now....it appears that she's laid 3 clutches in the same nest...learned a few things this year...in addition to the fact that they can use the same nest multiple times, apparently they young don't have to fledge at the same time...they can be days apart and parents will take care of fledglings and nestlings at the same time....and if he dies, she'll continue....Turdus migratorius.....
And thats my summer...
