I was driving with my son near Whalen Corners in Huron County looking for the pair of Northern Goshawks that were reported there.  We could not find then but decided to travel down some sideroads looking for anything.  We were noting how few birds we had seen and then noticed a few Crows fly up as we drove past a field and after a closer look we saw this Rough-legged Hawk sitting on it's prey.  We took a number of photos from the car and were able to see him catch a rabbit before we left.

Terrific photo of a Rough-legged hawk.
You were right to be so optimistic as to think that
roaming around the countryside would pay-off.

Thanks Shortsighted.  Sometimes you just need to get out and roam.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean, especially when you are taking your son, or daughter
to let them see how you do it. Many years ago I took my son up to the Bancroft area and Renfrew county
to look for minerals. Last year I roamed around looking for Snow Bunting and Horned Lark even though
knew I knew the odds were not in my favour. I finally spotted a H. Lark on the side of the road. I then
pulled over. I looked at the bird and it looked up at me and it was not impressed. It scurried down the
embankment and was gone.
