Phenomenal lightning video

If I was twenty years younger a visit to Lake Maracaibo would certainly be on my bucket list. As birders we automatically qualify as sky watchers, and for anyone with more than a passing interest in all things weather this is a must watch video. Watch on the big screen if possible:

Thanks for the link. Amazing video of a place alive with weather. A place with dramatic light and exotic sounds, rife with possibilities such as bats that look like giant butterflies. Too bad we can’t capture all that fervent energy and store it in capacitors the size of rail tank cars and then siphon off what we need without emitting greenhouse gases beyond what is created by natures discharge.  The flashes of lightning remind me of a particular impressive storm that hit the city a few years ago. I went down to the waterfront in Scarborough at the foot of Port Union road and set up my Canon G9. The discharges were fast and furious and most of the lightning bolts were horizontal (sheet lightning) instead of ground strikes. Good Stuff.

Cool shot of a very hot phenomenon! If you liked that video you will probably like this website; just think, before crazies started hijacking airplanes and creating havoc in the skies I might have been able to hitch a ride with him (at my own expense of course). Do you still have your G9? My A650, which I always refer to as 'a poor man's G9', still works, and because it allows one to shoot long (>1 sec) exposures at high ISO's I still use it for the occasional night shot. Comet Atlas, where are you?

Yes, I still have my Canon G9 but the rear view screen is cracked and does not display an image. Taking a picture when I can’t access the menu means setting the dial to “auto” and letting the camera make the adjustment. Fortunately the ISO selector is an external dial so I can set that manually. The zoom lens has a focal range (when converted to 35mm equivalent) of 35mm – 210mm. The cropping factor is 4.42x. I also have a 2X TC that mounts in front of the lens.
