I was out for a short walk this afternoon south of the Ashbridge's parking lot, at about four of the clock, when I heard a familiar, yet strange jumble of musical notes (quite pleasant) ...

I espied a silhouette in a willow -- an icterid, to be sure -- and had one of my rare synaptic events. I knew I'd have to lie down soon, but sauntered 'round to the other side to confirm that the vocalist was a very enthusiastic Orchard Oriole. Me so happy.

After about five minutes, he flew north over the marina ... where will he end up? I'll check tomorrow to see if he's lingering. I then laid myself out on a nearby picnic table to recover, and woke to an equally disoriented older gentleman yelling, "Otto! Otto! Wake up, Otto!" Strange, to be sure, but he didn't harm me.

I know these orioles have nested at High Park, which has massive coverage at this site, and many, many years ago Margaret discovered a pair down Chine Drive in Scarborough, pre-Bluffer's Park era, but this is the first one I've seen here.

North of the Spit, on Leslie St., a Sharp-shinned Hawk blew by this a.m., heading NNE. Yesterday, A Merlin did likewise.

Saturday will be interesting, I'm certain.

Cheers,
