A group of squirrels were minding their own business on the ground of Colonel Sam Smith Park when a juvenile Cooper's Hawk showed up in their midst. Two squirrels ran towards a nearby tree only to realize that it was too small to provide adequate protection as the hawk inched closer, so they jumped off and ran in two different directions. Now here's the kicker. The hawk was so mesmerized by the acrobatic squirrel that he completely lost sight of one that passed by right under its beak. The hawk continued tormenting the squirrels for a while without catching one. It was a difficult shooting condition with the animals in the shade and bright light right behind them, but it was fun to watch and take photos of.

An experienced photographer captured the folly of an inexperienced hawk.
The world is as it should be. I wish I was part of it.
