I need help identifying a bird I saw perched in a tree yesterday in the Greenbelt in Ottawa.  Here is the description:

About the size of a cardinal.  Smooth grey body (i.e. its belly).  Bronze head, small black beak (I think).  Black & white streaked wings (I think, this was hard to gauge).  Fairly long notched tail.  Bright orange splotch at the base of the tail.  This splotch was very striking and could be seen from above when the wings were closed, so I think it was on the upper side (i.e. lower back)....there may have been more orange on the back when the wings were spread.

Any ideas?  I hadn't brought a camera with me on the walk so all I have is this description, but I'm hoping the bright orange splotch combined with grey body and bronze head will be enough to solve the mystery.

Thanks!

Following additional research, I am now quite certain it was a female Pine Grosbeak.  So I'm confident the mystery is solved!

Lucky you! Both got to see it and now able to solve the mystery.
