Initially I thought it was a red squirrel, but it didn't have the ear tufts.

Does a fox squirrel interbreed with a grey?


I have photographed a number of different squirrels lately. Didn't know they look so different.

Looks like a normal red squirrel to me.


As far as I know, the only place you can find fox squirrels in Ontario is Pelee Island. They are larger than gray squirrels.

Thomas, you are right! I read that the fox squirrel should be a lot bigger. Thanks!


The previous animal was definitely a small one. I wonder where the ear tufts go.


Please take a look at this one below, which has a brown chest. Does it mean that it is an interbreed between grey and fox? I just find them very perplexing....

2nd pic still an Eastern Grey Squirrel as well,  in spring and fall when they change their coats, you will see alot of variation in colouring.  Grey squirrel has 2 colour variations, grey and black, your just seeing more of the black variation gene showing up in this one
