On Dec 28, a juvenile of this western species was reported seen on Acres Road, north of Taunton in Durham County. I dropped by the location shortly after 3 and it was nowhere to be seen for another 50 minutes. Then around 4 PM it showed up and landed on one of the Spruce trees on a private property, close to the road. It was cloudy and hardly any daylight left. Despite the challenging condition all of us present took a few photos before we left it sitting on a nearby white pine, presumably for roosting. Here are some photos from that encounter. Needless to say it was the first time seeing a Prairie Falcon for me. By the way, it was again reported today, Dec 29.

Really sweet captures of this displaced falcon. I love the blue beak. You went all that way and waited for an hour ... well, perseverance doesn't even cover that level of dedication. It's like you knew you were going to see it, you knew it in your bones. I too can sometimes feel things in my bones and none of it is very pleasant. Of course you know what this means ... Ally will likely be there tomorrow. I can only visit the site on Google maps and I didn't see no friggin falcon. I guess that you found out about it on eBird, but that also means all of Bravo company is probably bivouacked there. I really can't quite make it out on Google maps.

Nah, will have to disappoint you this time. I am terrible at finding locations. Need a lot of handholding. Too many times I ended up in the wrong intersections, wrong gate. I missed the Blue Grosbeak, the Kite. So I will not go for the falcon, he is too fast for me.

An airline pilot has a co-pilot, while the demands of old world air warfare necessitated both a pilot and a gunner, or observer to get results. A big game-hunter needs a guide, a mountaineer needs a Sherpa, Oliver needs Hardy, Abbot needs Costello, Bert needs Ernie, Dinu needs big glass, I need my head examined. Sometimes the disorientated and geographically challenged need a wing man, or woman, to help navigate through the unfamiliar. You might need to team up with a receptive agent to find those rare avian treasures. Not everyone can do it alone. Not everyone can be an Indiana Jones. Not anyone looks that good in a beat-up hat.
