Ever since I came to know about Carden Alvar through this forum some 8 years ago I keep going there at least twice a year, sometimes more often. On May 28, a friend of mine and I ended up at Carden when we couldn't secure permit to go into Nonquon Sewage Lagoon. We arrived mid morning; by that the most birds went into hiding; however, still ended up seeing some grassland birds.
The most entertaining part was watching a House Wren, busy house hunting when it popped up below a nest box that was already claimed by a pair of Tree Swallow. The swallows obviously didn't like to see another renter among them. The pair went after the wren which quickly fled the scene, only briefly. A short while later it returned to the same spot obviously not wanting to give up this prime real estate. Another chase pursued and the wren finally moved on.
When the carver didn't quite get it right.
