We have it on Dinu’s word that White-crowned sparrows are present and able at Downsview Park. Well then, it must be true. One does not question the word of a demigod and even if we did show a hint of skepticism that would only piss him off. It stands to reason that a pissed-off dinusaur is not a good thing to have in one’s midst. So then it’s settled. WC sparrows are here and ready to rock. Although usually loners, they may collect in small groups during the fall migration. This sparrow has some unusual behavior, including faking injury when a predator comes too close to the nest, and sneaking up to its nest so that its approach remains unobserved. This sparrow has an enormous range when all the subspecies are included. This has resulted in slight differences in colour of crown stripes and bill. Moreover, even their song/call has a sort of dialect revealing its origins. When birds from different breeding locations mix it up during the fall convention the mingling birds may learn dialects different than their own. Sort of like a Yorkshireman taking on the dialect of someone from Cornwall just because they shared a beer together. That’s so cool.

Juvenile, or first year adult

Mature Adult

Interesting Fact: The WC sparrow has the superpower of hemispheric sleep, like some fish, so that one side remains alert to danger, or to keep tabs on its mate.
